Stitch N' Pitch with the SF Giants: Coffee, Tea, and Drink Cozies

sfgiants_coziesfinal.jpg

Here's a great way to show some SF Giants team spirit by making your own felt cozies which are perfect for coffee/tea cups and plastic drink containers. Dress them up with rick rack and some fun cut outs with embroidery and you have an instant craft project you can make in less than one hour!

Materials

  • felt squares in orange, white, and black
  • rick rack large or medium sized in black and gold
  • embroidery floss
  • embroidery needle
  • thread and invisible thread
  • sewing needle
  • scissors
  • sew on snaps or velcro

Felt is like a hidden gem at the craft stores. I got these felt pieces for only 20 cents each at JoAnn's Fabrics in Colma.

When you've downloaded and printed out the cozy pattern, pin it to your piece of felt and cut on the lines. After you've cut all around, you'll have your main cozy piece ready to embellish!

sfgiants_rickrack.jpg
Next, size up the rick rack to the length of your cozy for the top and bottom, leaving a little bit at the ends over the cozy. (You'll be able to trim later). Sew the rick rack to the felt cozy piece by spacing your stitches for every "up" and "down" zig zag. If you're using gold metalic rick rack you can use invisible thread for best results.

sfgiants_tracing.jpg
For the baseball felt piecing, trace the bottom of a paper coffee cup or any round object onto your white felt. Cut out the piece and use red embroidery floss to create the baseball stitches.

sfgiants_letters.jpg
If you want to applique letters like the "SF" onto your cozy, print out the text PDF, cut out the word you are using and pin it to your felt as you cut around. It can get tricky with the pin so move it around as you need to.

sfgiants_baseballemb.jpg
You can sew on the baseball to the cozy using white thread and hide your stitches in the underlying layers of the felt.

sfgiants_embroidery.jpg
Or use embroidery floss to stitch on the letters for a fun texture!

Sew on snaps or sticker velcro to the back of your cozy and you're ready to go!

Tip: If you're using velcro, make sure you open it holding the vecro to the felt and not using the corners of the felt cozy.

Thank you to Crossroads Cafe for the free coffee cups used in this project!
